The search for identity is an ever-lasting topic in literature, which has occupied poets and novelists since the beginning of the written word. A constant struggle of a man to find his place in universe inspired many literates to explore the way in which this balance could be achieved. The self-exploration has been one of the common themes.
The questions: ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Where do I belong’ may be related to the doubts concerning gender, national, religious or even political identity. The process of exploring of identity, as well as it’s forming and discovering, is one of the central topic of the great American poets of nineteenth century.
The following paper is analysing the different gender identities appearing in the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. The main focus is concentrated on the use and description of gender in poetry. The question is how gender identities are characterized and how we get to know them.
