INTRODUCTION


As a political term, feminism was an invention of the 20th century, but it had not been frequently used in everyday language until the sixties. The term "feminist" was used for the first time in the 19th century as a medical term used to describe either men feminization or women masculinization.

In modern usage, feminism has always been related to the women's movement and to the attempt of women social role improvement. As such, it is related to two basic beliefs: that women are, because of their gender, in a less favourable position; and, that this position can and should be reversed. This way, feminists illuminate what they see as the political relationship between the sexes, the dominance of men and the subordination of women in most societies, if not in all of them. Nevertheless, an integral characteristic of feminism is also the diversity of views and political positions.

The women's movement fought, for example, for the purposes ranging from obtaining the voting right for women, establishing an equal access to education and increasing the number of women in elite positions in public life, to the legalization of abortion, cessation of female circumcision and the abolition of the restrictive and humiliating dressing rules. Similarly, feminists adopted both revolutionary and reformist political traditions, and feminist theory at times relied on completely different political traditions and values...
