Tv violence

Does the violence in films and on TV contribute to violence in society? This question has been debated for decades. During that time some 2,500 books and articles have been written on the effects of TV and film violence on human behavior. The results of one of the most extensive studies ever done on the subject of violence and TV were released in 2003.

Researchers followed 329 subjects over 15 years. They found that those who as children were exposed to violent TV shows were much more likely to later be convicted of crime. Researchers said that, "Media violence can affect any child from any family," regardless of social class or parenting. Girls who watched more than an average amount of violence tended to throw things at their husbands. Boys who grew up watching violent TV shows were more likely to be violent with their wives. Canada was one of the first countries to extensively research this issue. The results of their studies prompted some of their engineers to devise the "V-Chip." As you may know, the V-Chip allows parents to lock out TV programming they consider objectionable to their children.

I think that it is very worrying, as the world is hopefully not as hopeless as TV and soap opera's portray. I wouldn't be so bothered if the violence on TV was on after 9pm, but most of it isn't. And soap opera's are the worst offender's, I think it is disturbing for children especially. I think it is a shame that TV bosses think a violent storyline grab's rating's.
And maybe it does, but it also influences young impressionable children. There are other important issue's that need portraying, not just violence. I also feel that TV and certain show's demonize the youth's of today, when we often do not show the good achievement's of the youth's in the world today. On the whole, we focus far to much on violence as a form of entertainment and it is worrying and unacceptable.

Young children sometimes have difficulties with distinguishing between fantasy (or media) and reality, but older people don't generally have that problem. If they do, chances are they have a mental disorder to begin with. So it is possible in my opinion, but will being exposed to violence inevitably make someone a serial killer? Well, I must say this, Hitler had no TV, and we all know what happened...

On the other hand, our minds soak in everything and create a view of the world based on the information it is fed. Media violence is sending the message that there is fear, anger and hatred in the world. If it is repeated often enough, those reactions are fed back out in terms of thoughts an individual has. Negative thoughts create negative feelings and beliefs resulting in negative actions. Enough of that together and we end up in a violence ridden society. Younger children are susceptible to imitating what ever they see more than those who are older and have an idea of what is proper behavior, as in non-violent.

If we are young and less sensitive to the inevitability of our own death, we are even more apt to take risks and give little thought to the meaning and impact of our aggressive behavior. In any case, teenagers as well as some adults unconsciously saturate their lives with the elements and icons of aggression and violence. This is starting to become a serious problem in our society.
