CASE

One of the most famous murders in USA happened on December the 8th, 1980. Mark David Chapman murdered John Lennon in front of his apartment building in New York. Along with the Paul McCartney, John Lennon was one of the founding members of The Beatles, one of the most successful music groups ever. He was both glorified and hated, for his music, life style, his emotional relationship with Joko Ono and rebellious lyrics. In 1970, The Beatles broke up, and Lennon continued his solo career, until his early death in 1980. Mark David Chapman was born in Texas, and grew up in a dysfunctional family. His father was a staff sergeant in US Air Force, and, as Chapman later testified, was physically abusive towards his wife and son. . .


FACTS

The events of that night are clear and Chapman’s behavior and movement is fully covered by statements of many witnesses. On the morning of December the 8th, 1980, Chapman left his room in Sheraton Hotel, leaving behind his personal items. On his way to The Dakota, apartment building where Lennon lived, Chapman bought a copy of "The Catcher in the Rye" and on the first page he wrote: "This is my statement", signing it with "Holden Caulfield", (the protagonist of the novel). He spent most of the day close to The Dakota apartment building talking to other fans and the doorman. Around 5:00 pm, Lennon left the building, accompanied by his wife Joko Ono. Chapman approached Lennon, shook hands with him and held out a copy of Lennon's new album, Double Fantasy, for him to sign . . .
